Roofer guide

Six tasks, in this order. Finish and check each one before the next. Where it says stop and call — stop for real.

Non-negotiable: on trapezoidal metal, fasten on the crest, never in the valley. The valley carries the water.

01

Before you climb

  1. Harness on, lifeline tied to a fixed point. No climb without that.
  2. Check the forecast: wet metal or strong wind means no work.
  3. Lift tools in a rope bucket, never in your hand.
  4. Count materials against the staging list before you start.

Before you continue: Modules, rail kits, fasteners and sealant are all there. If anything is missing, do not start.

Stop and call: if the sheet flexes, is rusted through, or gives when you step.

02

Mark where modules go

  1. Work on the slope the survey marked as usable.
  2. From the eave, measure up to the plan mark and chalk it.
  3. From the side edge, measure the other plan mark.
  4. That cross is the first module corner. Everything is laid out from there.

Before you continue: The mark does not cover vents or survey obstacles.

Stop and call: if the array does not fit without hitting an unsurveyed obstacle.
